Course Description: Develop intermediate spreadsheet skills for operational and financial analysis and business decision making. Use Microsoft Excel to generate, analyze, manage, and present data within a variety of business contexts.
Prerequisite: BUS 120 with a grade of C or higher or instructor permission. Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Build spreadsheets to solve problems and analyze data for specific business scenarios.
- Find numerical solutions by writing arithmetic formulas and using basic to advanced built-in functions.
- Generate possible outcomes for decision-making scenarios using what-if analysis tools.
- Format worksheets to display and communicate data clearly and effectively.
- Present data in visually meaningful ways with charts and other graphical enhancements.
- Organize data into meaningful arrangements using tables, PivotTables, and sorting/filtering techniques.
- Manage worksheets and workbooks including protecting workbook data.
- Create spreadsheets that incorporate efficient construction and time-saving features such as templates, macros, data linking, built-in functions, and conditional formatting.
Course Contents
- Guidelines for effective spreadsheet development.
- Techniques for entering data efficiently, proofing/editing data, and checking accessibility.
- Procedures for writing mathematical formulas.
- Beginning to advanced functions (statistical, financial, math & trig, lookup, text, date & time, logical) including nesting functions.
- Formula auditing techniques (trace precedents/dependents, error checking, and evaluating formulas).
- Formatting techniques (number, text, styles, alignment, cells, page layout, format painter, etc.).
- Data visualization tools such as charts, sparklines, and illustrations.
- Data organization with PivotTables and Tables including methods for sorting and filtering data.
- Worksheet and workbook management features including the protection of workbook data.
- Techniques for linking and referencing data between cells, worksheets, and workbooks.
- What-if Analysis tools including Scenario Manager, Goal Seek, and Data Tables.
- Efficiency and time-saving spreadsheet tools such as templates, macros, conditional formatting, built-in functions that improve productivity (text, logical, lookup), and other shortcuts.
