Course Description: Designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively implement bilingual education strategies in diverse classroom settings. Bilingual Education focuses on creating inclusive learning environments that support students with varying language skills and learning needs. Explore the principles, strategies, and best practices for modifying instruction to ensure language comprehensibility, relevance, accessibility, and challenge for students with a wide range of language skills. Also learn how to make provisions for students with diverse learning needs, including pacing, task adaptation, and assessment accommodations.
Prerequisite: ECED 402 with a C or higher. Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No

- Modify instructional plan to ensure language comprehensibility, relevance, accessibility, and challenge for students with a wide range of language skills.
- Create instructional plan in a content area that makes provisions for students with diverse learning needs, including pacing, task adaptation, and assessment accommodations.
- Incorporate language development tools into planning and instruction, particularly for language learners, to support their second-language proficiency development.
- Describe the value of diverse languages, dialects and cultures.
- Advocate for English language learners by collaborating with stakeholders and challenging biases and misconceptions to ensure equitable opportunities for language development and academic success.
- Explain the second language acquisition skill progression and how they relate to the English Language Development Standards.
- Identify specific strategies to use to support language development based on knowledge of a student’s current language level.
- Apply concepts, theories, and research of educational linguistics, second language acquisition, and literacy development in instructional planning.
- Plan a diverse set of learning activities that align with a specific literacy standard and will prepare a diverse group of learners to meet the standard.
