EDUC 315 - Early Childhood Development

Course Description: Delves into the intricate process of learning in children ages three to eight, focusing on various aspects such as neuroplasticity, knowledge construction, skill acquisition, and the development of disciplined thinking processes. Explores the profound influence of cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical development on the learning journey of young learners.

Prerequisite: Admissions in the ECE BAS program; and 240 score on WEST-B or ECED 280 and ECED 284 with a C or higher; and English 101, CMST& 210 or 220, EDUC& 150, EDUC& 115, and EDUC& 130 with a B- or higher.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Describe how learning occurs, encompassing neuroplasticity, the construction of knowledge, and skill acquisition, in three to eight-year olds.
  2. Describe the impact of cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical development on learning.
  3. Identify learners’ readiness for a learning objective by applying developmental frameworks to observation data.
  4. Describe the cognitive processes associated with diverse forms of learning, such as memorization, recall, critical thinking, creative thinking, and problem-solving.
  5. Describe the developmental stages in early childhood, spanning ages three to eight, encompassing physical, cognitive, social and emotional, and linguistic domains, including bilingual/multilingual development.
  6. Describe the Social Emotional Learning Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators for early elementary and how they can be used for assessing children’s social-emotional development.
  7. Practice trauma-informed pedagogy by identifying signs of trauma and describing how to create a protective relational environment.
