Course Description: Learn the fundamental principles and concepts of the structure of language, with a focus on phonological awareness and phonics in both Spanish and English. Contents include the sound-symbol correspondences of language and the relationship of phonemic awareness and the phonological system of language to the reading process.

Prerequisite: ECED 402 with a C or higher.

  1. Describe the relationship between phonemes and graphemes.
  2. Describe different syllable patterns and how they affect pronunciation and decoding, including both regular and irregular spelling patterns.

  5. Demonstrate phonemic awareness by breaking down words into their component sounds.
