Course Description: ESOL Level 1-1 (Beginning ELA Literacy) students improve English listening, speaking, reading, and writing and comprehension with a goal to develop college and career readiness skills. Prepares students for transition to ESOL 12.

Prerequisite: Placement into ESOL 11 or equivalent.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify common expressions in text and oral communication.
  2. Identify simple Yes/No questions and some Wh- questions, such as who, what, when, where, why, or how.
  3. Identify the “to be” verb forms in the Present Simple tense.
  4. Recognize basic verbs of preference, such as “to want” and “to like”“.
  5. Recall information from experiences or from a provided source.
  6. Recognize common short and long vowel sound patterns.
  7. Recognize subjects and verbs in sentences.
  8. Recognize basic parts of speech.
  9. Recognize basic personal information vocabulary.
  10. Use cardinal and ordinal numbers.
