Course Description: Learn about Electronic Medical Records (EMR), bookkeeping, and basic accounting in today’s medical office. Covers appointment and patient procedure scheduling, telephone practices, processing mail, office computerization, downloading/uploading electronic medical records information into an EHR, inventory, ordering and maintenance of office equipment and supplies; banking, payroll, credit, and collection.
Prerequisite: AHE 101 with a C or higher or concurrent enrollment.

- Analyze and document patient medical records using an Electronic Health Records (EHR) system to ensure accuracy, completeness, and confidentiality.
- Evaluate patient reception and scheduling procedures, including orienting patients to office policies, coordinating appointments, and applying telephone communication techniques.
- Utilize medical office computer software and electronic systems for administrative procedures and records management.
- Compose professional written communications, including e-mail, letters, messages, and procedures for handling incoming and outgoing mail.
- Perform medical office practice management functions, including billing, credit and collection procedures, banking, payroll, and financial record management.
- Manage office operations, including routine maintenance, inventory of supplies and equipment, evaluating equipment needs, and maintaining a safe and functional office environment.

- Contents of a patient chart; knowledge of the components and types of medical records.
- Patient reception procedures, maintaining a professional reception area, and providing comfortable surroundings.
- Medical office computer systems, electronic health records, and network security.
- Proper telephone communication and telephone triage techniques.
- Scheduling and coordinating patient appointments and procedures.
- Methods and guidelines for filing systems, record organization, and methods and guidelines for collecting, correcting, protecting, storing, retaining, purging, and destroying medical records.
- Documenting in an Electronic Health Record (EHR), including entering, updating, and securing patient information.
- E-mail communication and receiving, organizing, prioritizing, and transmitting information including letters, memos, messages, reports, facsimiles, photocopying, and processing incoming and outgoing mail.
- Medical office financial systems including banking, payroll, credit, billing, and collection procedures.
- Office equipment and supplies, routine maintenance, and inventory control methods.
