CSS 103 - First Quarter Experience

Course Description: An orientation to college life and specific resources to succeed in attaining educational goals. Topics include: identifying interests and occupational choices, engaging in “college knowledge” and planning for financing college costs and a degree timeline.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Students will be able to identify and access Skagit Valley College student support resources and reflect on which ones best support their academic and personal goals.
  2. Students will be able to develop a personal financial plan that outlines how they will fund and manage expenses related to their college education.
  3. Students will create a preliminary career plan that identifies short-term academic goals and long-term career objectives and maps the sequential steps necessary to prepare for their intended career.
  4. Students will be able to locate and interpret their program requirements and individual education plan, explaining the purpose, importance, and connection to their academic pathway.
  5. Students will evaluate how Skagit Valley College general education learning outcomes will support their personal, academic, and career goals.
  6. Students will be able to explain the importance of ethical use of information.

Course Contents
  1. Career exploration through identification of personal interests.
  2. Explanation of College System: registration, advising, financial aid, transfer regulations.
  3. Degree requirements at SVC and completing an educational plan.
  4. College Resources: tutoring, disabled student resources, multi-cultural student services, career services and financial aid.
