ECED 101 - Child Abuse and Neglect

Course Description: Overview of the legal requirements, professional responsibilities, and local laws and policies regarding child abuse and neglect (CAN). We will also review the history, indicators, dynamics, definitions, interventions, treatment, and prevention regarding CAN.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify the primary symptoms of child physical, emotional, sexual, and substanceabuse and neglect.
  2. Differentiate the varying legal responsibilities of professionals working with children.
  3. Discuss current views on intervention/remediation/prevention.
  4. Explain the primary laws (local and national) on child abuse and neglect.
  5. Describe the impact of abuse on the behavior and learning abilities of students.
  6. Evaluate strategies for responding to child emotional and/or behavioral distress.
  7. Describe methods for teaching children about abuse of all types and their prevention.
  8. Describe child behavior that indicates emotional distress, including indicators of possible substance abuse, violence, and youth suicide.
