Student Learning Outcomes
- Identify common Pacific Northwest fish species and major groups visually, taxonomically, and through keying.
- Describe the ecological roles of fish within their ecosystems, including connections to other vertebrates.
- Describe the evolutionary processes, relationships, influences, and adaptations that exist within and between different major fish taxonomic groups and have led to the great diversity of fish.
- Identify and describe the anatomical structures of fish and their physiological function at both cellular and organ level.
- Discuss economic, ecological, social, and management factors that influence Pacific Northwest fish and the human populations that rely on them.
Course Contents
- Life history of fish.
- Habitat partitioning and segregation by stream fishes.
- Physicochemical tolerances by freshwater fish.
- Diversity of niches in fish communities.
- Ecomorphological analysis of fish communities.
- Ecology of salmonids, their keystone status, and variable life strategies.
- Conceptual ecosystem model of salmon. Competing societal interests in salmon resources based on different cultural norms in PNW society.
- Fish conservation in rivers, lakes, and near shore habitats.
- Analyze and discuss technical papers.
- Technical readings in fish ecology.
