Course Description: This course provides a general survey of the development and evolution of rock and roll from its roots to the present. Introduces the student to rock music in the context of the histories and legacies of oppression as they apply to the artist, the music industry, and the listener. Students will also be introduced to major performers and events that have impacted society.
Prerequisite: ENGL 099 with a C or higher (or placement into ENGL& 101). Distribution Requirements: - Humanities Distribution Requirement

Student Learning Outcomes
- Explain basic rock harmony, form, and instrumentation.
- Identify leading rock artists from the 20th century.
- Analyze the relationship between rock music and socio-cultural biases including attitudes about race and other vectors of social difference.
- Explain how this art has shaped the values and attitudes of people throughout the world.
Course Contents
- Music: Ensemble, rhythmic emphasis, vocal style, instrumental style, harmonic structure.
- Lyrics: Major themes include romantic love, sex, alienation, justice/injustice, and introspection.
- Artist History: Psychological, social and economic conditions, musical history, important career landmarks.
- Societal context: youth culture and its relationship to society. Significant cultural and political movements impacting or impacted by rock music.
- Stance: The performers public images and actions as a guide to better understanding the music itself.
