Course Description: Learn from local leaders about the issues challenging San Juan County. Explore different locations, industries and resources in the county. Focus on critical topics impacting local government, natural resources and land use planning, economic development, health, education, social services, arts, culture and history. Learn how to apply leadership skills to current issues. Directly apply leadership skills to choose, plan, and complete a service project. Identify individual personality strengths and weaknesses, and learn strategies for working effectively with different people. Topics will include self awareness, ethics and stewardship, interpersonal communications, teamwork, group process, facilitation, equity, diversity, inclusion, conflict resolution, managing change, and public speaking.

- Facilitation Skills I: Roles & practices, decision-making in small groups, & stages of group development.
- Facilitation Skills II: Contracting, outcomes, timing, generating ideas, prioritizing.
- Facilitation Skills III: Handling challenges, designing a meeting, & interventions.
- San Juan Islands: Governance. Art, history, and culture. Economics & workforce development. Equity and social services. Ecology.
- Service Project Application.
