ECED 480 - Early Literacy Methods

Course Description: This comprehensive literacy course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively teach reading literacy to a diverse range of learners. Whether working with monolingual or multilingual students, this course will empower educators to create inclusive and culturally responsive reading literacy lessons that align with both Common Core English Language Arts Standards and dual language instruction standards. This course will focus on the Science of Reading Methods instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, the writing process, writing types and purposes: narrative, opinion, informative/explanatory, speaking and listening: (strategies to support standards) and language: (vocabulary, conventions).

Prerequisite: ECED 101 with a C or higher or concurrent enrollment; and ECED 402 with a C or higher.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Plan a diverse set of learning activities that align with a specific literacy (reading or writing) standard and will prepare a diverse group of learners to meet the standard.
  2. Describe the importance of learning content knowledge and vocabulary to the process of becoming a fluent reader.
  3. Identify readiness for learning key skills in reading development, such as phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, decoding, and fluency.
  4. Incorporate language development tools into planning and instruction, making content accessible to English language learners and supporting their English proficiency.
  5. Plan a diverse set of learning activities that align with a specific standard and will prepare a diverse group of learners to meet the standard.
  6. Provide descriptive feedback designed to engage students in analyzing their own mastery of language arts content.
  7. Create a differentiated set of assessments that is aligned with a learning standard and minimizes bias.
  8. Deliver both reading and writing instruction that meets the needs of individuals and groups, continuously monitoring and adjusting in response to student learning.
  9. Design both reading and writing lessons that align with both Common Core English Language Arts Standards and dual language instruction standards.
