Overview
Data Management and Analytics (DATA) at Skagit Valley College (SVC) is a forward-thinking, interdisciplinary program that allows students to get an entry level job in the area of data management and analytics. SVC’s Data Management and Analytics program focuses on providing students with the skills to empower ethical data-informed decision-making in business contexts. SVC’s DATA degree consists of the theory, technology, and practical skills necessary for data collection, transmission, analysis, and utilization. DATA focuses on four broad areas:
- Ethical data-informed decision-making in business contexts.
- Effective communication of data insights to diverse stakeholders.
- Essential skills in project management to navigate the analytics project life cycle.
- Hands-on experience in modern technologies that support data storage, data preparation, data analysis, and the reporting of data.
Program content includes data literacy fundamentals; data preparation; project management for analytics; descriptive analysis; Structured Query Language (SQL); data privacy; data security; data ethics; data visualization; data storytelling; Python programming for analytics; relational databases; data engineering; business dashboards; machine learning; and predictive analytics. Students will learn the role of data in AI as well as how, when, and why Generative AI solutions can be used as a tool in analytics and what to look out for with GenAI results. The DATA program prepares students for today’s digital landscape by staying current with disruptive technologies and fostering a growth mindset along with learning essential technology skills.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of SVC’s Data Management and Analytics program, students will be able to:
- Efficiently store and retrieve data in a relational database using a relational database management system (RDBMS) and Structured Query Language (SQL).
- Prepare quality datasets through data extraction, data ingestion, data cleaning, and data transformation.
- Communicate data insights to diverse stakeholders using visual representations.
- Apply descriptive and predictive analytics techniques on complex datasets to empower ethical and informed decision-making in business contexts.

Program Highlights
- Offered hybrid with weekly in person classes on the Mount Vernon campus.
- Program completed in student cohorts with entry in Fall.
- Designed to build basic skills in data analysis fundamentals before moving on to more advanced concepts in data engineering, data architecture, business intelligence applications, and predictive analytics.
- Incorporated technology certifications and portfolio projects in coursework.
- Integrated internship that supports career readiness.
- Intended to give students the skills needed to move directly into employment. While workforce degrees are not intended to transfer to a university, DATA graduates will be eligible to apply for admission to one of SVC’s Bachelors programs: Bachelor of Applied Science - Management, BAS degree.
Work-Based Learning
Cooperative education is integrated in the final year of the program. Students will transform data knowledge into practical work skills in a real work environment.
Degree Option
This program offers an Associate in Applied Science Degree, AAS degree in Data Management and Analytics. During their first year, SVC students are introduced to theory and the foundational skills to prepare, analyze, and visualize data. The first year of study also includes knowledge on data privacy, data ethics, and project management essential for any data practitioner. In the second year, students continue with more advanced topics in data including relational databases, Python programming for data analytics, data engineering, business dashboards, and predictive analytics. The program will be offered hybrid with weekly face-to-face meetings. The program includes experiential learning through a cooperative education internship course where students will execute data management and analytics concepts in a work environment.
