English Emphasis, Associate of Arts Direct Transfer Agreement, AA-DTA

Overview
The English program includes pre-college level courses designed to help students develop skills for succeeding in college-level composition courses. All students are required to take ENGL& 101 English Composition I . The other composition courses offered by the department, ENGL& 102 Composition II and ENGL& 235 Technical Writing , are designed to prepare students for careers and transfer to 4-year schools; they are regularly taught both as stand-alone classes and as integrated Learning Communities with other disciplines. Courses in professional/technical communication and creative writing are regular offerings. Before enrolling in English classes at the pre-college or college level, students should be placed into the appropriate class based on advisement and the results of the SVC English Guided Self Placement Tool. Students in need of pre-college English should reach out to the Basic Education for Adults (BEdA) Department for more information. Both pre-college and college-level reading courses are offered to improve students’ comprehension skills essential for any discipline. Some may be offered combined with other disciplines in Learning Communities.
Literature courses are offered as part of a comprehensive English program. Introductory and more advanced classes focus on the major genres, film, World literature, and American literature. Many literature courses are also offered through Integrated Learning Communities with other disciplines.

This Sample Schedule is provided as a guide for a traditional full-time student whose goal is to earn the Associate of Arts Direct Transfer Agreement, AA-DTA with an interest in English. The courses are designed with the appropriate number of credits to meet degree requirements and are organized in a recommended sequence. Literature courses can be taken in any order following completion of ENGL& 101 English Composition I . Please consult an SVC Advisor to schedule courses and develop your required personalized educational plan. LEARNING COMMUNITIES All SVC students are required to complete one Learning Community (LC) before they complete their AA degree. LCs consist of two courses linked in some way to allow integrated learning, and change as new LCs develop and others are revised or retired. Students should consult with their SVC Advisor to select LCs that work best for their emphases and schedules. |
